It is bordered to the north by Finland across the Gulf of Finland, to the west by Sweden across the Baltic Sea, to the south-central by Latvia, and to the east by Russia. The Estonians are desc exterminateants of Baltic Finns, the Estonian language sharing many similarities with Finnish. The modern build of Estonia is thought to originate from the Roman historian Tacitus, who in his plentifulness Germania (ca. CE 98) described a people called the Aestii. Similarly, ancient Scandinavian sagas refer to a land called Eistland, close to the German and Danish terms Estland for the country. Estonia’s path to nationhood has been an exceptionally turbulent one, having fatigued most of its history under the control of foreig n powers. It has historically been dominated by German and Russian speaking overlords who frequently tried to suppress the Estonian language and culture, conducting all personal matters of the state in the nobles’ alien native tongues and often requiring authoritative education in German and Russian for Estonian children.
